My relationship with non-fiction has been a rocky road. I love learning the things that are in non-fiction, but unless ordered to ingest the book it just sits at the top of my to-be-read list for months, making me guilty. (I have a similar relationship with “classics.”) Why read lists of facts when you can read stories? It took me two years to get through Guns, Germs and Steel.

Happily, in the past two months I’ve read more non-fiction than I had in the previous three years. Here are my thoughts on some of those books I paid thousands of dollars to read.
